Lobbying

We maintain strong one on one contact with state legislators and government leaders. We are proactive in our efforts for the benefit of our industry and members. We engage the members in grass roots effort for the benefit of the industry.

We represent the industry on such issues as:

  • Highway use and sales taxes.
  • Vehicle size and weight
  • Highway safety
  • Vehicle law
  • Environmental law

Our past legislative successes include the rollback of the toll increase on the the West Virginia Turnpike during the 2006 legislative session.

Education

We keep members informed of constantly changing laws and regulations to aid them in holding down the cost of doing business. Some examples are:

  • We supply a monthly newsletter Highways & Byways, to all members to keep them up to date on regulations, trends and industry changes. We fax or e-mail several times a month a one-page version of this publication with education information and industry tips.
  • When the legislature is in session members receive WVMTA legislative updates, News Inside the Capitol, to keep them abreast of legislative activity and to aid in our grass roots efforts.
  • Our web site,  which supplies a vast array of information to keep members informed, as well as links to other industry sites.  We provide members access to archived newsletters and other features not available to the public.
Safety

Promoting the safety of our members and the public is very important to us. Each year we conduct an annual fleet safety contest, a truck driving championship, a West Virginia Driver of the Year Contest, among other promotions and events. The 2007 Truck Driving Championship will be held May 19th at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston. We also assist the U. S. Department of Transportation in selecting the West Virginia Professional Driver of the Year. We sponsor the West Virginia Safety Management Council and plan and conduct an annual safety awards banquet.

Survival Hotline

Members are urged to call the WVMTA office at (304) 345-2800 anytime with questions concerning new laws and regulations or any matters that affect their business.

State and National Liaison

We act as a liaison with many state agencies including the Department of Motor Vehicles, Public Service Commission (PSC), Department of Transportation (DOT), State Police, State Tax Department and many others. We work closely with the American Trucking Associations on federal legislation and governmental affairs.

Members Services

WVMTA provides its members access to a variety of critical services including an insurance program offering health, life, dental and disability. Members also receive discounts with Joe Boggs & Associates and JJ Keller.

Annual Convention

We hold an annual convention for members where they can gain information at our business sessions, play golf and network at social functions. The 2007 Annual Convention will be held August 5th - 7th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

WVMTA PAC

With the many tough issues that our industry faces  it is important for us to have candidates in office that understand our industry. The WVMTA PAC gives us the ability to donate to business friendly candidates with who we call work in the state Legislature.


Fleet Membership

Any firm, company or corporation owning or operating motor transport vehicles shall be eligible for membership in the organization.

Associate Membership

Individuals, firms or corporations having an interest in the trucking industry shall be eligible for associate membership.

Affiliate Membership

Individuals, firms or corporations having no interest in the West Virginia trucking industry but desiring to be affiliated with the association for business reasons shall be eligible for non-voting participating membership.
